The last few days have been a total whirlwind. From writing final exams to my first day working as an employed student nurse. And let’s not forget the fact that it was my first time ever stepping foot onto that floor……where I didn’t know anyone, or what was expected, or where anything was. Overwhelmed? Ha! A total understatement.
It was 10 minutes before my shift ended today. Being the “new girl on the block” I try and be as friendly as possible and introduce myself to anyone standing in a 12 foot radius of me. A tall, grey haired gentleman with a face of lines and wrinkles that indicated a fully-lived life came walking over to the nurse station. He had a stethoscope around his neck and a small child holding his hand. The man was clearly one of the floor doctors I had not yet been introduced to and I thought it was so fantastic that he would allow his granddaughter to tag along while he saw patients at the hospital.
The little girl and the grey haired doc came around to where I was located and the girl began to sweetly converse with me. With a smile, she proudly told me her name and announced she was 4 years old. We chatted a bit where I asked if she had any brothers and sisters, what her favorite color was and so on. We made good conversation as I mentioned to her, "You know, I have a little boy just about the same age as you." She shyly smiled in reply. Then I pointed to the doctor who was right beside her and said, “So is that grandpa?” She looked at me with a confused expression and replied, “Nope.” I reciprocated the confused look and inquired with a smile, “Well, then who is he?” She wryly glanced at the doctor who then looked back at her with intensity in his eyes. She looked directly at me in the eyes and said, “That’s my daddy.”
Oh my good Lord.
I seriously CANNOT express how embarrassed I was. I released a high-pitched squeal saying, “Daddy? Of course he is. That’s so cool.” Then I quickly scurried out of the room with my tail tucked between my legs. I dove into the back room and hid with a few other nurses who had heard my comment and they laughed at me while I turned about 97 shades of red and purple…..and then green from nausea.
Nice one. Way to make a first impression with the doctor that I’ll be working with from now on. And on my first day of work, no less. WHAT A DOPE!
Wait, I think I have to go throw up a little bit……………………………
Ok, I’m back.
Apparently the little girl was Mr. Doc's later-in-life child from his 3rd wife. He also had children well into their 30's....so really, thinking grandpa wasn't a far stretch. However,“Foot in your mouth” doesn’t even begin to do this situation justice.
The moral of the story is that karma always comes back to bite you. I’m just a little afraid of what type of karma will be coming full swing back at me after pulling this stunt.

I'm sorry but I had to laugh. Don't worry too much about that comment. YOu are new to the job and people make mistakes. Once you are comfable with the job you will become more relaxed, and do your job better
Wow I don't even know what to say! You know when you see someone do something really embarassing and you cringe and think to yourself I'm glad it's not me? Yah, it's kinda like that! But seriously the guy obviously had it coming.
Kim
Yikes! Kinda scared for my first day but hopefully I will have Kim on the floor with me and you waving at me from down the hall! :)(resisting the urge to run at me with arms wide open in embrace). I am not shocked that this happened to you by the way...it's just something you had to do being you.
"Ack." would be an appropriate reaction.
Oh my dear sweet Hobbling Midly...
...perhaps a blessing can come out of foot in mouth disease?
Being the new girl at work always sucks. Good luck!
I'm sure this guys probably heard it a hundred times at this point, he's already forgot about it...this is coming from someone who has been easily mistaken to be the daughter of her own husband!
Dear Shuffling Wimply. Poor Girl. I was already laughing before I got to the punch line. I just wish I could have been there. You probably made more friends on that floor than you could have any other way.
I'm still laughing.
Yah....don't feel too bad about it. If he has kids in their 30's too there is a good chance he does have grandkids older than her. My uncle had his first and only when he was 55. My Uncle has an 8 year old son and my dad (who is 2 years younger than him) has a 13 year old grandaughter! I'm sure he has heard it before! I can imagine the embarassment though! Hugs!
That's ok. One time I was helping out with a foley placement when the nurse I was helping exclaimed quite loudly "Wow! It's so SMALL!!!!" Yeah, it was a semi-private room, and yeah, the door was open. She was actually refering to the size of the catheter, but nonetheless, it was hard to keep a straight face.
I laughed out loud. What an embarrassing moment. One for the books for sure. :)
I think we all have foot in mouth disease sometimes :0
Still laughing as I type this - working full time will kill you - whenever I have to work full days I nearly die! Hope you perk up soon - more coffee perhaps ;-)
What a fun first day of work! I hate it when I do those kind of things and want to just go hide in a corner.....such uncomfortable moments!=)
Okay, I have to say it was an honest mistake and karma recognizes that. But, girl! It was a HYSTERICAL honest mistake. SO something I would've done!!! LMAO!!
Oh that's nothing. Nothing at all. Don't worry.
Oh, and I'm more or less done.
And thanks, I will.
After reading all the other comments I dont feel so bad for leting out a giggle or two while reading. Its hard to tell now a days whos the parent and whos the grandparent cause there are so many people starting later in life or like this guy started over a few times. But hang in there, soon some one new will arrive and you can laugh at their moment of terror.
I must finally come out of the closet to admit I read your blog. And to tell all the readers out there that D gives a killer intradermal injection; doing great in her new job.
